Men’s golf clothing by weather

What should you wear for a round of golf?

Start with the course dress code, then dress for the temperature, rain, wind and humidity from the first tee through the back nine. The right choice depends on your playing window—not only the daily high.

A reliable men’s golf outfit

  • A collared or course-approved golf shirt.
  • Tailored golf shorts in warm weather or golf pants in cooler conditions.
  • Golf shoes or clean, course-approved athletic footwear.
  • A removable quarter-zip, vest or lightweight mid-layer.
  • A waterproof shell when rain overlaps the round.

Private club or unfamiliar course

Choose the more traditional option: a collared shirt, tailored bottoms and golf shoes. Avoid denim, sweatpants, gym shorts, cut-offs and graphic shirts until you have checked the club’s rules.

Frequently asked golf clothing questions

Can men wear shorts golfing?

Usually, provided they are tailored golf shorts and the course permits them. Check the individual course because private clubs may have more specific requirements.

What temperature is warm enough for golf shorts?

There is no universal cutoff. Many golfers consider shorts around 17°C, adjusted for wind, rain, walking versus riding and whether they naturally run warm or cold.

What should I wear for golf in the rain?

Wear breathable golf clothing with a lightweight waterproof shell. Pack rain gloves when sustained rain is likely and avoid heavy layers that restrict the swing.

Should I dress for the tee time or daily high?
